Welcome to Witch & Wizard Academy! You are in History of Magic Class. As part of your lesson, you will be making a sensible book bag to carry rather large and impressive lesson books. Of course you can also just use it for your i-pad!

Owl Experience Level: One owl (Beginner)

Finished measurements of bag:
BEFORE FELTING:
Before seaming: 44” long x 21” wide measured flat.
After seaming: 14” high x 18” wide measured flat.
AFTER FELTING:
11” high x 14” wide measured flat not including gusset.
Finished braided front closure 16” long.
Finished braided shoulder strap 54” long.
Yarns used: Bulky weight wool yarn such as:
Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride, 85% Wool, 15% Mohair, 113 g –
225 yds – 114 m, Color: M – 08 WILD OAK – 4 skeins.
NOTE: bag is felted in the washing machine so be sure to get something that is 100% wool or other animal fiber. (Though please note that other animal fibers may felt differently.)

Tension/gauge:
Before felting: Work 10 sts and 14 rows to measure 4×4”
in St stitch using US 13 or 9 mm needles.
After felting, work will shrink down to about 13 sts and 18 rows in 4×4”. Use needles necessary to get gauge.
I-cord – 12 rows to measure 4” in length.

Notions:
A pair of US 13 (9 mm) circular needles 24 long for BAG,
A set of US 11 (8 mm) dpns for STRAP & CLOSURE,
stitch markers, tapestry & sewing needles, 2 safety pins or lock stitch markers, sewing thread that matches your yarn color, some straight sewing pins for blocking.

Tiny owl stitch dictionary:
dpns: double pointed needles
k: knit
k2tog: knit the next two stitches together.
kfb: knit into front and back of the next stitch.
p: purl
pm: place marker
(RS): right side
ssk: slip next 2 sts knitwise onto your right needle, insert left needle purlwise into the front of the sts and knit them tog.
spp: slip next st purlwise onto your right needle, purl next stitch, pass the slipped stitch over the purl st. One st decreased.
St st: stockinette/stocking stitch. knit a row, purl a row.
